Municipal Grant Saves Michael J Fox Theatre From Closure

On May 12 2026 we learned that the City of Burnaby has allocated a one time grant of $300,000 to the Michael J Fox Theatre in Burnaby BC. The funds will be distributed throughout 2026 and 2027, and will enable the MJF Theatre to continue operation, and seek additional partnerships and funding to support its operation in future years. This is great news for our members working at MJF. Such a great turnaround in the future of the MJF theatre is also due to the lobbying of IATSE 118, IATSE national and international lobbying, engagement with the media, Burnaby City Council, and absolutely every last person you who signed the petition to keep it open. The community of Burnaby now will look forward to having the MJF Theatre as a cornerstone of public life in their city for many years to come. Thank you everyone, thanks to all of you.

Upon this important development, IATSE Local 118 will be filing a Notice of Bargaining with the employer on behalf of our members.
