PPE - Personal Protective Equipment Required on Local 118 Calls

All the grip positions for calls in Local 118, including, sound, lighting, electrician, video, carpenter, pusher, and also ground riggers must have Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE, to wear on the call.

IATSE Local 118 requires you bring and wear the following PPE when you come to a work call:

  • Hard Hat

  • High visibility safety vest

  • CSA approved steel toe work boots (Green Triangle)

  • Light duty work gloves

Other things worth considering:

  • Stagehands generally dress in jeans, or cargo pants, with a t shirt, and sometimes a hoodie for colder days. Lots of black.
  • Our work gets dusty and dirty at times, so plan accordingly.
  • We climb, crawl, carry, walk, stand, kneel, push, pull, and lift. At times, the work can be physically demanding.
  • If you have a cold, consider wearing a mask. There is usually hand sanitizer around as well.
  • It is noisy sometimes, earplugs may come in useful.
  • Hi-viz vests are generally not worn in theatres, but are required for arena and outdoor calls.
  • Other PPE may be required for your task, or provided. If you need something, ask for it.
  • None of the things required need to be fancy, but you need to have them.
  • Listen closely to the tool talk at the beginning of a call.
  • If you don't know or understand something, ask someone.
  • Your awareness of your surroundings at work and your good attitude are just as important to your safety as everything else on this page.
  • Other departments will have additional requirements.
